Viking Trail Adventure

Want to ride like a Viking?

It’s possible. We’ve done it.

The Viking Trail route of Newfoundland and Labrador is a world class destination full of UNESCO World Heritage sights, beautiful geography, epic coastlines and rewarding terrain for seasoned Cyclists. What we offer here is a tailored experience chock full of local flavour, both culinary and cultural, as well as the bicycle ride of a lifetime.

Clients will arrive in Deer Lake, and the plan of attack depends on when you arrive. If it’s late in the day we’ll head to your lodgings for the first evening. If you’re up for it, Rough Waters Brewing is a locally owned and operated micro-brew you can visit to kick off the trip. Be sure to get some rest, though – the coming days will test you.

Day 1 of riding – which is possible to kick off with an early morning touchdown in Deer Lake – will involve 73km’s into Norris Point, the home of the Trails, Tails and Tunes festival in May as well as summer-long celebrations of music at local venues such as the Cat Stop. With such a short day of riding, there will be time for some Kayaking if you’d like, or Standup Paddleboarding. The area is full of scenic hikes, though, so plenty of options await – you just let us know.

Day 2 Takes you along the coastal Viking Trail to Port Aux Choix. You’ll spin through the renowned Gros Morne National Park, past the stages of local fishmongers who earn their living off the sea to this day. The ride is 173km in total, but with the easy rolling terrain you’ll barely feel it more than the previous days’ 73. In Port Aux Choix you’ll be treated to a gorgeous sunset which sets apart Newfoundland and Labrador’s West Coast from anywhere else in the province.

Day 3 will keep you hugging the coast as you ride North. This is a 228km spin, but the rewards are endless. The terrain is gradual with few massive climbs and plenty of downhills on which to recover. About halfway you’ll be treated to a view of Labrador, “The Big Land”, before turning west towards the inner-peninsula. Here you can choose whether to finish in Lanse Aux Meadows and take photos next to the National Park where archeologists have recreated a long lost Viking village. Or, you can head straight to St. Anthony and enjoy a pint of Ragnarok Brewing, the locally owned and operated alehouse with a line of quality craft beers.
